Today

Today is just an ordinary day
In early November; the sky is grey
And heavy with cloud. A breeze stirs.
Deep cloud-coloured, the shadowy furze
Mantles the mountains far away.

The ground is muddy; the air is cold.
The trees stand clad in mellow gold,
Rich dark green, russet and red,
And the colours float down around my head
As the leaves slip free from the twigs’ stiff hold.

Laughing children in warm clothes play,
And overhead on its lonely way
A bird passes in far-off flight.
The clouds part in a shaft of light;
Today is just an ordinary day.
